We’re absolutely over the moon to share that Furness Media won the Environmental Sustainability Award at the Barrow Buzz Business Awards 2026!

To be recognised alongside so many brilliant local businesses is a real honour. And this award means a huge amount to us as a team full of people who really love and respect this planet we call home! Sustainability isn’t something that's all talk and no action at Furness. It’s something we genuinely care about and work on every day.

Over the past couple of years, we’ve taken some big steps to reduce our carbon footprint. And we started right at home in our Barrow town centre office. We installed solar panels and heat pumps. This is helping us move towards cleaner, greener energy and significantly reduce CO₂ emissions. It’s taken time, planning and perseverance (plus lots of time up on the roof and maybe a few headaches!), but it’s been completely worth it.

We’ve also made a conscious effort to rethink how our office and coworking space is furnished. Instead of buying shiny and new, we’ve chosen upcycled, preloved and refurbished furniture wherever possible. From the rescued bus seats that now make up our booth seating, to the colourful refurbished bar stools in our entrance area. We even bought a second hand refurbished coffee machine. We're proud that our office shows that sustainability can be practical, affordable - and still look really great too.

Behind the scenes, we’re just as committed. We use 100% green‑powered web hosting. This helps to ensure the digital work we do for our clients is lighter on the planet too.

Other sustainable actions we're working on as a company include:

• Staff using public transport, foot or bike to get to work
• Flexible working to reduce unnecessary travel
• Staff using reusable water bottles/coffee cups
• Recycling for card, paper, plastic, cans, crisp and chocolate bar packets.

Our MD Guy and General Manager Sophie along with their partners had a great time attending the Barrow Buzz Awards celebrations. Guy headed to the stage to accept the award when we were announced as winners. We think he summed up the moment perfectly... in Guy's words: “WOWZER!”

Most of all, we’re proud of our team for making it happen. Every idea, every little change, and every shared value adds up to something that makes an actual difference. This award isn’t the end of our sustainability journey either! There’s plenty more to come from us in the years ahead. Looking after the planet and making responsible choices will always be part of how we work and grow. We've got even more big plans for the office and the company so watch this space!
