How to create shareable content on social media

Creating shareable content on social media isn’t about luck – it’s about hitting the right notes at the right time. Over the years, we’ve been able to work out what works and what falls flat. But, that being said, it isn't a 'learn once and stick to the formula' type thing. As social media trends and tastes change and evolve, what we post has got to change too.
In today's blog we're talking about 10 simple ways to help make your content fly in your audience's feeds.

Know your audience
Have you ever tried telling a joke to someone who doesn’t get it? That’s what creating content without really knowing your audience feels like. When you understand what they like, what they share and what interests them - you're part of the way there!

Make it useful
Whether it’s a tip, guide, or how-to - people love sharing content that's useful. One of our clients shared a simple “DIY fix for leaky taps” post. It wasn’t flashy, but it was practical, and it spread like wildfire.

Keep it simple
When you’re clear and to the point, people are more likely to read and share your message. Avoid unnecessary stuff. If it doesn’t need to be there, don't be afraid to just cut it out.

Be relatable
If your content makes someone say, “That’s me!”, you’re onto something. We once shared a post about working from home struggles, and it resonated because everyone’s been there.

Use strong imagery
When you're trying to create shareable content on social media, striking image can do half the work. In our experience, colourful, bold images consistently outperform plain text posts. The old saying holds true: a picture is worth a thousand words.

Ask questions
Questions get people talking. A simple question in your post can spark a conversation and encourage sharing. It’s human nature to want to weigh in with an opinion!

Make it emotional
Content that sparks off an emotion - whether it’s joy, pride, or inspiration – gets shared. We’ve seen posts about personal triumphs or heartwarming stories spread far and wide. By the same token, people love funny and quirky content. Did a seagull just walk in to your shop and try and pinch a pair of socks from a display stand? Post it on social media! People love something that makes their day a bit brighter.

Offer value
If you’re giving something away for free, people are more likely to share it. Think recipes, patterns, Ebook resources etc…

Time it right
Timing is key. Posting when your audience is most active increases the chances of your content being seen and shared. There’s no point posting at 3 a.m. Unless you’re targeting night owls that is!

Include a call to action
It might seem obvious but you want people to share, ask them to! We found that when we explicitly ask our audience to share something, it often works better than when we don’t.

Creating shareable content isn’t rocket science – it’s about knowing your audience and crafting something that adds value to their lives. Keep it simple, relatable, and useful, and you’ll be on your way to creating content people can’t help but share.
