Which social media platform should I focus on?

Which social media platform should I focus on - because you don't need to be on all of them!

Marketing your business on social media can feel like it's a never-ending to-do list. Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, X, Pinterest… and the list goes on. You can really feel the pressure to be everywhere all at once, posting constantly, but here’s the truth: you really don’t need to be. Actually, spreading yourself too thin can be worse than not showing up on socials at all.

Where actually are your customers?

Say you run a coffee shop. In real life you wouldn’t put up posters about your cafe in an empty alley and hope people wander by. The same totally applies to social media too. If your ideal customers are business owners looking for professional services, LinkedIn might be the best bet. Or what about if you create beautiful, visual things like flower arrangements or cakes, art or interior design, Instagram or Pinterest could be more effective. What about if you're a local outdoor activity centre targeting families? Facebook is still a solid choice.

Quality over quantity

A half-hearted attempt at five platforms is not the best approach. But if you focus on one or two, you can create content that actually engages the people you want to attract. A well-crafted Instagram carousel or an informative LinkedIn article will do far more for your brand than ten rushed tweets.

What do YOU enjoy using?

Let’s keep it real here - if you hate a platform, you won’t keep up with it. If writing long-form content isn’t your thing, maybe skip LinkedIn articles. If you love making short, snappy videos, TikTok or Instagram Reels is definitely the place for you. Social media works best when it feels natural and not forced.

Test it, tweak it and go with what works

You don’t need to commit forever. Try one or two platforms for a few months, see what gets engagement, and adapt to. The idea is to pay attention to what people really respond to and lean into that. And if a platform isn’t delivering results, don’t be afraid to drop it and focus your time on one that does work.

Our conclusion?

Instead of stressing out over being everywhere all at once, focus on being effective where it really matters. One engaged, active platform beats five neglected ones. Choose wisely, post intentionally, and things will start looking up for your business (and your free time!)
